What is a Medical Peeling?

Medical peels come in various depths, including superficial, medium, and deep and can address a range of concerns, including anti-aging, acne, pigmentation, and skin texture. These treatments use specialised solutions containing active ingredients like glycolic acid, fruit acids, trichloroacetic acid, Jessner's solution, or salicylic acid. By applying these active acids, new skin cells are brought to the surface, improving skin texture, evening out skin tone, and resulting in a refreshed, youthful appearance.

The Treatment

Medical peels involve the application of specialized solutions to the skin, designed to target specific concerns such as anti-aging, acne, pigmentation, and texture issues. Depending on the depth of the peel, the treatment can range from superficial to deep. Superficial peels gently exfoliate the outer layer of the skin, while medium and deep peels penetrate further to address more significant skin concerns.

During the treatment, the chosen medical peel is applied to your skin. You may experience a slight stinging or tingling sensation as the solution works to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. This is a normal part of the process and indicates that the peel is actively treating your skin.

After the Treatment

After the treatment, the skin may appear red, feel tight, and experience slight swelling. For medium or deep peels, the skin will begin to flake, feel tight, and become dry 1 to 3 days post-treatment. These effects can persist for 5 to 10 days, with redness lasting a few days. For optimal results, it is recommended to use appropriate home care products in combination with the medical peel.

Number of Treatments Required

The number of treatments needed varies. Typically, a series of 6 to 8 treatments is recommended, with sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. This schedule allows your skin time to recover and gradually improves your condition. Keep in mind that results can vary for each individual.

Each treatment is customised to your skin type, with visible improvements after each session. To maintain these results, regular maintenance peels with a skin therapist are advisable. Additionally, using the right at-home skincare products is essential for enhancing and prolonging the benefits of your treatments.

Home Care Advice and Aftercare

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds throughout the entire treatment process. Always protect your skin with a good sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
  • For 48 hours after the treatment, avoid intense exercise, saunas, or hot showers to allow your body to release heat properly.
  • For two weeks after laser treatment, avoid any other procedures on the treated area, such as facials or scrubs.
  • Flaking usually starts about 2 days after treatment. Do not pick at or scrub away any loose skin, as this can lead to spots or scars.
  • Your skin will need at least 10-12 days to fully recover. During this time, you may experience redness, tightness, or a burning sensation, especially when applying products or washing your face. This is normal, so there’s no need to worry.
  • Use neutral, fragrance-free, and alcohol-free products to keep your skin hydrated. You can apply sunscreen more often if your skin feels tight. Aloe vera or vitamin E can also help soothe and restore your skin.
  • Change your pillowcase on the day of your treatment to reduce the risk of infection.
  • For 5-7 days after your treatment, avoid using products that contain acids.
