What is a Electrocoagulation?

Electrocoagulation is a technique used to remove benign skin irregularities. These are harmless skin spots that can appear anywhere on the body and face in both men and women. Although they are usually harmless, they are often considered cosmetically undesirable. The exact cause of benign skin irregularities is not always clear, but factors like genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, aging, and excessive sun exposure typically play a role.

Electrocoagulation can be applied to treat various skin irregularities, including warts, skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, angioma senilis, raised moles, dermatosis papulosa nigra (age spots common in darker skin), and xanthelasma.

The Treatment

The device looks like a small pen and uses a gentle, safe current. It has a fine tip that is held just above the skin irregularity. You’ll only feel the current when it touches the spot. The current burns the irregularity, forming a scab right away. Because the tip is so precise, the healthy skin around the spot isn’t affected. How long the treatment takes depends on how many spots you have and their size.

After the Treatment

After the treatment, a dark brown scab will form on the treated spot. This scab usually falls off in about a week, allowing the skin to heal without leaving a scar. It's common for the area around the scab to be a bit red and swollen due to the heat from the device, but this is a normal reaction. About two weeks later, you'll have a follow-up visit at the clinic to check on the healing and see if the results are as expected. In some instances, a second treatment might be needed to fully remove the skin irregularity.

Number of Treatments Required

In most cases, one treatment is enough to effectively remove the skin irregularities. During the follow-up visit at the clinic, the results will be carefully evaluated. If the desired outcome hasn't been fully achieved, an additional treatment will be provided at no extra cost.

Home Care Advice and Aftercare

  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds throughout the entire treatment process, and always protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
  • Avoid intense exercise, saunas, or hot showers for 48 hours following the treatment.
  • Avoid using soap on the treated area for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not scratch or remove the scabs; the skin underneath is still healing. The scab will naturally fall off within a week.
  • It is recommended to apply Alhydran, a soothing ointment made with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E, to the treated area after the electrocoagulation. This helps promote healing and cools the skin. Alhydran is available at the clinic.
