Pseudofolliculitis barbae

Pseudofolliculitis barbae, or "shaving bumps," happens when hair grows back into the skin, causing painful red bumps.

What is Pseudofolliculitis barbae?

Pseudofolliculitis barbae, commonly known as "shaving bumps," is a skin condition where hair grows back into the skin after shaving, leading to inflammation and irritation. This condition typically occurs in areas where hair is shaved or waxed, such as the face, neck, and legs. It manifests as small, red, and itchy bumps that can become inflamed or infected. Pseudofolliculitis barbae is more common in individuals with curly or coarse hair and can be exacerbated by improper shaving techniques or frequent shaving.

The Treatment

To treat pseudofolliculitis barbae, we utilize a combined approach of medical peels and laser hair removal. Medical peels exfoliate the skin, reducing inflammation, unclogging pores, and helping to prevent hair from becoming trapped under the skin. This process also improves skin texture and reduces irritation. Laser hair removal complements this by targeting hair follicles with precise light energy, which helps to reduce hair growth and prevent future ingrown hairs. Together, these treatments address both the symptoms and causes of pseudofolliculitis barbae, leading to smoother, clearer skin and decreased irritation.

After the Treatment

After the treatment, the skin may appear red, feel tight, and experience slight swelling. For medium or deep peels, the skin will begin to flake, feel tight, and become dry 1 to 3 days post-treatment. These effects can persist for 5 to 10 days, with redness lasting a few days. For optimal results, it is recommended to use appropriate home care products in combination with the medical peel.

Number of Treatments Required

The number of treatments needed varies. Typically, a series of 6 to 8 treatments is recommended, with sessions spaced 2 to 5 weeks apart. This schedule allows your skin time to recover and gradually improves your condition. Keep in mind that results can vary for each individual.

Each treatment is customised to your skin type, with visible improvements after each session. To maintain these results, regular maintenance peels with a skin therapist are advisable. Additionally, using the right at-home skincare products is essential for enhancing and prolonging the benefits of your treatments.

Home Care Advice and Aftercare

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds throughout the entire treatment process. Always protect your skin with a good sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
  • For 48 hours after the treatment, avoid intense exercise, saunas, or hot showers to allow your body to release heat properly.
  • For two weeks after laser treatment, avoid any other procedures on the treated area, such as facials or scrubs.
  • Flaking usually starts about 2 days after treatment. Do not pick at or scrub away any loose skin, as this can lead to spots or scars.
  • Your skin will need at least 10-12 days to fully recover. During this time, you may experience redness, tightness, or a burning sensation, especially when applying products or washing your face. This is normal, so there’s no need to worry.
  • Use neutral, fragrance-free, and alcohol-free products to keep your skin hydrated. You can apply sunscreen more often if your skin feels tight. Aloe vera or vitamin E can also help soothe and restore your skin.
  • Change your pillowcase on the day of your treatment to reduce the risk of infection.
  • For 5-7 days after your treatment, avoid using products that contain acids.
